Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for methods and systems that can generalize from data, such as recognizing images, understanding language, recommending content, or controlling robots.

In practice, AI often means machine learning and neural networks. Today’s generative assistants (see generative AI and LLM) are only one part of the field.

Key characteristics

  • Is an umbrella concept covering everything from rule-based systems to modern machine learning and generative AI.
  • Describes systems that solve tasks that previously required human perception, language understanding, or decisions.
  • Helps you distinguish the technology field itself from specific products like ChatGPT, Claude, or image generators.
